DIFFERENT FORMS OF THE WORD OF GOD

DIFFERENT FORMS OF THE WORD OF GOD

“The Word of God” has different meanings in it. We can know the meaning clearly by studying through the form used to present the word of God. There are several ways through which the Word of God has been mentioned in the Bible.

A. “The Word of God” as a Person: Jesus Christ:-

The Word mentioned in the gospel John 1, 1-18 is not a word that any human language can explain or any human being can understand. The Word that is God himself has the power of creation. It is the metaphysical language with which God created himself as Son (Jesus Christ, The Word that became Flesh), with which he created the universe and all living beings.[i] The word of God and the person of God are not different. The word of God became flesh and dwelt among us Jn 1:14 means that the word and God are same. The word has life in it. It has the dwelling power in every area. God created everything through Him for Him and by Him. God spoke the Word to make things happen. Everything was implemented by the power of God’s word and the same creating Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus Christ as a person of the Word of God revealed the Glory of God through His very life and in everything He did on this earth. But it does indicate that among the members of the Trinity it is especially God the Son who in his person as well as in his words has the role of communicating the character of God to us and of expressing the will of God for us.[ii]

B. “The Word of God” as Speech by God:-

The word of God is God's speech, the mind and revelation of God (l Cor I). The word of God is the speaking God. No one knows God apart from God's word, and God's word is God's revelation. The church was called into existence by the word, and it exists in the world and comes together in obedience to the word to receive the word. The sermon is a fundamental form of the word of God. Scripture is the primary witness to the eternal word that became incarnate in Jesus Christ. It points authoritatively to the Word of God. Preaching is the secondary witness to the Word; it points to the Word on the basis of scripture. It actualizes the apostolic witness to the Word of God in the power of the Holy Spirit. These powerful, creative words from God are often called God’s decrees. A decree of God is a word of God that causes something to happen. These decrees of God include not only the events of the original creation but also the continuing existence of all things, for Hebrews 1:3 tells us that Christ is continually “upholding the universe by his word of power. The word of God as a speech make things happen. The word of God the decree has power to create things from nothing (Gen 1:3; 24). The syntagme, word that comes from the mouth of God, has a multiple meaning. The phrase “comes” expresses a continuous action: it implies that which happened in the past, is happening at the present and will continue to happen in the future. God speaks and reveals his will about all that is necessary for human life, simultaneously emphasizing humanity’s dependence on God.[iii]
