LESSON - 2
THE PURPOSE OF
EVANGELISM
The purpose of evangelism is
pictured in the Great Commission passage (Matt.28.18-20). The purpose of evangelism
has four very clear distinct parts.
`The Great Commission included four basic
commandments, which are as follows:
Go
This is the first step in evangelism. (Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8, Rom 10:15, 15,
Is. 6:8, 9) Go out where people are to share the gospel and win souls – at the
factory, in the parks, on the street, high ways and by-ways (Luke
14:23). We should be ready to go to
any place or people groups at any time.
The principle is to go where the fish is and don't expect the fish to come
to us.
Make disciples
It is the ultimate goal of evangelism. It is seeking to bring them into a
right relationship with God. A disciple is a person, who:
who commits his life completely to the Master.
who learns the teaching i.eWord of Truth.
Who lives continually by the Word of Jesus.
who wants to become like his Master. (Eph. 4:12-13)
Teach them
It is an ongoing ministry of sharing God’s Word with people so that they
may commit their life to God and become mature in their Christian life. The
early church had teaching and preaching. Paul taught men
in his rented house at Rome. (Acts
28: 30-31, 19:8,18:27-28)
A Church should have a systematic study of God's Word. Just as a newborn
babe needs special care and attention, so it is same with the those who have
newly accepted the faith.
Baptize them:
It is the public proclamation of one’s repentance and faith in Jesus (Acts.
2:44). It is a clear evidence that the person has taken the step to be
incorporated into the church.
So, baptism is a total identity with the death and resurrection of Christ
and the community of God's people.
GOLDEN LINES
Any mission that does not move towards fulfilling the Great Commission of
the Lord need not be a Christian Mission.
