LESSON – 3

THE MESSAGE OF EVANGELISM

Hopelessness of the world

Good news, the gospel of Jesus brings hope

An evagelist must be aware of this truth

1. Significance of Gospel

Apostle Paul, while writing to the Church in Corinth, reminds the church about the gospel he preached among them and mentions the significance of the message in I Corinthians 15:1 – 4:

Christ Centered:

The true message of gospel includes His substitutionary death (died for us) and His resurrection (raised on the third day).

Scriptural: The Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and authoritative (according to the Scriptures).

Apostolic: The same gospel, which was proclaimed by the apostles in the first century, has been handed over to us. (received)

Personal: Applies to individual life. Christ is a personal saviour. (you are saved).

2. Content of the Gospel

A). Man’s need of salvation

a)Man is a sinner

Every person born into this world is a sinner. (Ps.51: 5)

Sin displeases God. Rom. 3:23 says,

b). Some consequences of sin :

It brings wrath of God. (Rom. 1:18, 3:20, Jn. 3:18);

Eternal separation from God’s presence. (Is. 59:1- 2):

Eternal punishment. (2 Thes. 1:9, Rom. 5:12): Sin enslaves man.

(Rom. 6:17):

It brings guilt. (Ps. 51:3-4):

It causes spiritual blindness. (2 Cor. 4:4):

C) The helplessness of man

Man is powerless to help himself except through the

sovereign gracious act of God. (Rom. 5:6-16)

D). People are perishing without Christ.

Ps. 9:17- turned to hell

Jn. 3:16. –perish

Jn. 3:36-wrath of God

Mark 16:16 –condemened

Rev. 20:15- lake of fire

B. God’s provision for the need: Jesus Christ

John 3:16

Jn. 3:17

Is. 53:5-6,

John 1:29, Heb. 9:28,

1 Peter 2:24, 3:18,

2 Cor. 5:21

Now by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we can have forgiveness of sin and eternal salvation

The context of salvation is manifold:

For our guilt, there is forgiveness, cleansing and justification.

(1 John 1:7, 2:12, Rom. 3:24, Eph. 4:32)

For our alienation, there is reconciliation. (Rom 5:10, 11, Col. 1:19 - 22)

For our depravity, there is regeneration. (II Cor. 5:17, John 3:6,7. 1 Peter 1:22, 23, Eph. 4:24)

To meet our state of judgment, there is a gift of eternal life. (Rom. 6:23, 8:1, 1 Jn. 5:11,12)

GOLDEN LINES

D.L. Moody once said, “I see every person as though he had a large L ( Lost) in the midst of his forehead. I consider him lost until I know he is saved.”
